Project Overview

Steel look sliding doors in Surrey were used to form the principal garden elevation of this single-storey family home extension. The brief required a large glazed opening that would increase daylight, provide direct access to the patio and introduce a traditional Art Deco character to the contemporary addition.

Sieger Systems supplied a biparting Sieger Slim Sliding Door arrangement with fixed glazing, bespoke aluminium glazing bars and fixed gable glazing. Black powder-coated frames, matching pressings and coordinated flashings create a consistent steel look across the complete elevation while retaining the minimal profiles and thermal performance of an aluminium system.

Project Challenges

Steel look sliding doors in Surrey within a full gable elevation

The extension needed to establish a stronger connection between the internal living area and the rear garden. This required a wide opening with large glazed areas, but the homeowners also wanted the elevation to have more architectural definition than a conventional minimally framed sliding system.

The design therefore had to combine two apparently different requirements: slim aluminium profiles that maximise daylight and decorative glazing bars that reproduce the rhythm of traditional steel glazing. The fixed panes, moving doors and gable glazing also needed to align as one composition rather than appear as separate systems.

At the threshold, the opening needed to support an uninterrupted transition to the block-paved patio. The junctions around the gable and brickwork also required coordinated pressings and flashings to complete the glazing cleanly and manage the interfaces with the extension structure.

Project Solutions

Biparting sliding doors with bespoke glazing bars and fixed gable glass

A Sieger Slim Sliding Door was configured as a biparting system, allowing the central sliding leaves to move apart and create a wide opening to the patio and garden. Fixed glazed panes positioned to either side extend the glass elevation while maintaining a balanced composition when the doors are closed.

Bespoke aluminium glazing bars were applied across the sliding and fixed panes to create the required steel look. This gives the elevation an Art Deco-inspired grid while preserving the reduced framing and large glass areas of the underlying sliding system.

Fixed gable glazing continues the design into the roofline, increasing daylight and reinforcing the full glazed character of the rear elevation. Aluminium pressings and flashings were finished to match the black door framing, creating a controlled junction between the glazing, gable structure and warm-toned brickwork.

A flush threshold was used at the sliding opening to reduce the visual and physical change in level between the internal floor and external patio.

Project Highlight

The sliding doors, fixed panes and gable glazing were designed as one steel look composition. Bespoke glazing bars continue across the different glass elements, allowing the elevation to retain a consistent traditional grid while providing a wide, contemporary biparting opening to the garden.

Performance considerations

The Sieger Slim Sliding Door combines a 20mm vertical junction with thermally broken aluminium framing, allowing the elevation to maximise clear glass while supporting year-round internal comfort. The system provides tested air, water and wind resistance, together with acoustic performance and integrated multipoint locking.

The biparting arrangement gives the homeowners flexibility in daily use. The central panes can be opened to provide garden access and natural ventilation, while the closed elevation continues to bring daylight into the extension and maintain views towards the garden.

The flush threshold is supported by an integrated drainage subframe designed for exposed external openings. Matching aluminium pressings and flashings complete the gable interfaces and help maintain a coherent weathered junction around the full glazed elevation.

Together, the fixed and opening elements allow the steel look sliding doors in Surrey to provide the visual rhythm of traditional glazing without sacrificing the performance or operating flexibility of a modern aluminium system.

Sieger’s conclusion

Holstein Avenue demonstrates how steel look sliding doors in Surrey can combine a wide garden opening with decorative glazing bars, fixed gable glass and coordinated aluminium detailing. The result is a contemporary extension that responds to the warm brick architecture while introducing greater daylight, ventilation and access to the patio.

This approach is suited to architects, designers and homeowners seeking a traditional steel-inspired elevation with the slim framing, thermal separation and practical operation of an aluminium sliding system.
