Project Overview

St Annes is a contemporary rear extension to a Grade II listed townhouse, using slim aluminium doors in Notting Hill to increase daylight and connect a new kitchen and dining area to the garden. The glazing package combines a three-pane Sieger Slim Sliding Door, a Sieger Lux Pivot Door and structural roof glazing within a light, neutral interior scheme.

The Sieger Systems products were installed by IQ Glass, Sieger Systems’ UK glazing partner, which provided the glazing design and installation service. Together, the sliding door, pivot door and overhead glazing form a coordinated architectural package rather than a series of separate openings.

Project Challenges

Slim aluminium doors in Notting Hill for a listed townhouse extension

The extension needed to introduce a clearly contemporary layer to the Grade II listed property while retaining a controlled relationship with the existing building. The glazing had to increase daylight across the kitchen and dining space, provide practical garden access and maintain a consistent minimal appearance across several different opening types.

The project also contained visible external steelwork that would have interrupted the finished elevation if left exposed. The design therefore required a coordinated approach to framing, roof glazing and external pressings so that the structural elements could be concealed without adding visually heavy cover details.

Internally, the kitchen island divides the cooking and dining areas, placing the glazing at the centre of how the extension is used. The sliding and pivot doors therefore needed to support circulation between these zones and the garden while preserving the open character of the plan.

Project Solutions

Three-pane sliding wall, pivot access and concealed steelwork

A large three-pane Sieger Slim Sliding Door was installed between the dining area and garden. Each sliding leaf incorporates a horizontal glazing bar, creating the visual rhythm of a six-pane glazed elevation while retaining the operation of a three-panel sliding system. When opened, the doors create a moving glass wall that connects the dining area directly to the external space.

The Sieger Lux Pivot Door provides a separate access point from the kitchen to the garden patio. Positioned opposite the step to the main garden, the door uses a minimal pivoting mechanism that becomes visible when the leaf is opened. This creates an alternative circulation route while maintaining the same slim aluminium language as the sliding system.

Structural roof glazing brings daylight into the centre of the extension, addressing areas that could not rely solely on the rear-facing door openings. Bespoke aluminium pressings conceal the external steel building elements and were polyester powder coated to match the aluminium door frames, allowing the different parts of the glazing package to read as one coordinated installation.

Performance considerations

The glazing package combines daylight, garden access, security and weather resistance within a Grade II listed townhouse extension. The slim sliding door system uses a 20mm vertical junction to reduce visible framing while providing tested Air Class 4, Water Class 7A and Wind Class C5 performance. The system also offers acoustic reduction of up to 41dB and locking at up to four points, depending on the height of the installation.

The structural roof glazing supplements the full-height door openings by bringing top light into the kitchen and dining areas. At the external elevation, the colour-matched aluminium pressings protect and conceal the supporting steelwork while preserving a consistent finish across the glazing and surrounding construction.

The combination of sliding, pivoting and overhead glazing allows the extension to remain open and naturally bright while providing clearly defined access routes and a controlled relationship between the interior and garden.

Sieger’s conclusion

St Annes demonstrates how slim aluminium doors in Notting Hill can be coordinated with structural roof glazing and bespoke external pressings within a sensitive listed-building extension. The approach is suited to architects, designers and homeowners seeking to introduce larger glazed openings and contemporary aluminium systems without losing control of proportion, finish or heritage context.
