Project Overview
Marine-grade glazing in Cornwall was specified throughout this contemporary new-build home in Wadebridge, designed by Joan Kinnane to maximise daylight and frame long views across the surrounding landscape. The https://siegersystems.co.uk/technical-advice/aluminium-glazing-in-a-coastal-environment/ required a glazing package that could provide large clear openings while responding to salt-laden air, wind exposure and the associated risk of corrosion.
Sieger Systems supplied bespoke aluminium casement windows and outward-opening Sieger Legacy Doors, finished in marine-grade RAL 7026. Adhered glazing bars, black ironmongery, insulated steel supports and coordinated perimeter details allow the windows and doors to read as one architectural package across the house.
Project Challenges
Marine-grade glazing in Cornwall for an exposed coastal environment
The primary challenge was to maximise glass across the elevations without compromising durability or long-term performance in the coastal setting. Expansive windows and doors were required to capture the Cornish views, but exposed aluminium, hardware and interfaces also needed protection against salt spray, moisture and corrosion.
The different openings had to maintain a consistent architectural appearance despite serving separate functions. Casement windows were required to provide daylight and ventilation, while outward-opening doors needed to create practical access without interrupting the clean frame rhythm across the elevations.
Large door bays also introduced structural and interface requirements. The glazing needed adequate support between adjoining openings, together with coordinated cills, pressings and ventilation details, while preserving the restrained contemporary appearance of the facade.
Project Solutions
Casement windows and outward-opening Legacy doors with coastal detailing
Sieger Casement Windows were positioned throughout the house to bring natural light into the living spaces and frame selected views of the surrounding landscape. Their aluminium frames were finished in marine-grade RAL 7026, providing a consistent external finish suited to the exposed location.
Outward-opening Sieger Legacy Doors were used where direct access was required. The door and window systems share adhered glazing bars and black ironmongery, creating a coordinated framed appearance rather than treating each opening as a separate element.
Insulated steel supports were introduced between the larger door bays to provide the required structural support while maintaining the intended glazing layout. Integrated pressings and standard cills complete the perimeter interfaces, and slot aeration was incorporated to provide controlled ventilation without adding visually intrusive vents to the wider composition.
Project Highlight
The complete door and window package uses one marine-grade RAL 7026 finish, repeated glazing bars and black ironmongery. This allows casement windows, outward-opening doors and the structural supports between larger bays to read as one coordinated coastal glazing specification.
End Result
Performance considerations
The marine-grade glazing in Cornwall was developed around durability, thermal efficiency, ventilation and long-term visual consistency. The specified marine-grade finish provides additional protection to the aluminium frames in an environment exposed to salt spray and moisture.
Insulated steel supports between the door bays help maintain structural integrity while limiting thermal bridging at the wider glazed openings. Integrated pressings and cill details provide controlled interfaces between the frames and surrounding construction.
Slot aeration allows background ventilation to be introduced through the glazing package without compromising the clean appearance of the windows and doors. The outward-opening doors provide additional purge ventilation and access, while the casement windows distribute opening elements across the wider plan.
The shared RAL 7026 finish, black ironmongery and adhered glazing bars maintain a consistent facade language while the larger glazed areas provide daylight and panoramic views throughout the home.
Sieger’s conclusion
Cornwall House demonstrates how marine-grade glazing in Cornwall can combine wide views, controlled ventilation and coastal durability within one coordinated aluminium package. The casement windows, outward-opening Legacy Doors and supporting interface details respond to the environmental demands of the site without compromising the architectural design.
This approach is suited to architects, designers and homeowners working on coastal homes where aluminium windows and doors must withstand exposed conditions while retaining consistent finishes, slim detailing and clear views.
