Project Overview

A coordinated package of slim aluminium glazing in South London was used to reconfigure the rear of this semi-detached family home. The homeowners needed more space for their growing family but wanted to remain in the property they had occupied since the 1990s.

The renovation opened the previously cramped and disconnected ground-floor rooms into one kitchen, dining and living area. Sieger Systems supplied a three-track Sieger Slim Sliding Door and a bespoke aluminium casement window arrangement, increasing daylight and creating a direct visual and physical connection to the generous rear garden.

Project Challenges

Slim aluminium glazing in South London for a growing family home

The existing ground floor no longer provided the space or circulation required by the family. The kitchen, dining and living rooms felt separated from one another, while limited rear glazing weakened the relationship between the interior and garden.

The remodel therefore needed to create one functional open-plan space with a substantially larger garden opening. The glazing also had to provide clear views when closed, practical ventilation and easy access when open, without introducing visually heavy framing across the new rear elevation.

A second challenge was coordinating the sliding doors with the adjoining casement glazing. The two systems needed to form one controlled composition while responding to different functions, including garden access, fixed views and the creation of a usable internal window seat.

Project Solutions

Three-track sliding doors and a glazed window-seat arrangement

A three-track Sieger Slim Sliding Door was installed across the principal garden opening. The system comprises one fixed pane and two sliding panes, allowing the moving leaves to stack across the fixed glass and create a wide opening from the new kitchen, dining and living space to the garden.

Alongside the doors, Sieger Systems designed an aluminium casement window arrangement to increase daylight across the dining area. The glazing was constructed on an engineered brick plinth positioned at the outer edge of the extension. This created a deep internal cill that functions as a window seat while retaining a large glazed area above.

The aluminium framing was polyester powder coated in black to contrast with the white internal and external walls. Warm-toned timber cladding was introduced to selected external areas and the kitchen ceiling, moderating the contrast between the dark frames and pale building finishes.

Project Highlight

The aluminium casement glazing was positioned on an engineered brick plinth that extends into the dining area as an oversized internal cill. This converts a necessary construction interface into a usable window seat while maintaining a clear glazed connection to the garden.

Performance considerations

The slim aluminium glazing in South London combines a large opening configuration with tested weather, thermal and acoustic performance. The sliding doors use a 20mm vertical junction to reduce visible framing while providing Air Class 4, Water Class 7A and Wind Class C5 performance.

The three-track configuration provides flexible ventilation and access, with the two moving panes allowing the opening width to be adjusted according to daily use and weather conditions. When closed, the large glazed elevation continues to provide daylight and garden views throughout the colder months.

The adjoining casement window arrangement increases the total glazed area without requiring the entire elevation to operate as a door. Its engineered brick base provides a secure interface with the building structure and creates the depth required for the internal window seat. Black aluminium framing and warm timber cladding coordinate the different systems within one architectural composition.

Sieger’s conclusion

South London Home demonstrates how slim aluminium glazing in South London can resolve the spatial limitations of an established family property without requiring the homeowners to relocate. The sliding doors provide a wide garden opening, while the adjoining casement glazing increases daylight and introduces a practical window-seat detail.

This approach is suited to architects, designers and homeowners reconfiguring rear extensions where access, daylight, family use and coordinated aluminium detailing need to be resolved as one glazing package.
