Project Overview

Aluminium glazing in Bristol was specified throughout this home refurbishment to https://siegersystems.co.uk/technical-advice/maximising-natural-light-within-the-home/ and connect the main living areas with the garden. The interior combines a tall, pitched ceiling and exposed timber beams with pale finishes, stone flooring and contemporary aluminium frames, creating a controlled relationship between traditional materials and modern glazing.

Sieger Systems supplied three Sieger Lux Bifold Door sets, a Sieger Lux Casement Door and a coordinated package of aluminium casement windows. A three-pane fixed window was positioned above one of the three-pane bifold arrangements, extending the glazing towards the peaked roof and bringing daylight into the full height of the living space.

Project Challenges

Aluminium glazing in Bristol within a timber-framed interior

The refurbishment needed to introduce larger glazed openings without diminishing the existing architectural character of the house. Exposed timber beams and the tall, pitched ceiling establish a strong traditional framework, so the new aluminium systems had to provide a clearly contemporary contrast while remaining visually coordinated with the natural materials.

The principal living space also required a stronger physical connection to the garden. Multiple opening elevations were needed to provide access and ventilation, but the frames could not become visually dominant across the room.

At the end wall, the height of the pitched ceiling created an opportunity to introduce glazing above the main door opening. The fixed and opening systems therefore had to align as one composition, distributing daylight across the lower and upper parts of the elevation.

Project Solutions

Bifold garden openings with fixed glazing above

Three Sieger Lux Bifold Door sets were installed around the main living space to create wide openings towards the garden. Their folding operation allows the glazed elevations to be substantially cleared during warmer weather, providing direct external access and natural ventilation.

On the end wall, a three-pane fixed casement window was positioned above a three-pane bifold door. Aligning the fixed panes with the bifold leaves below creates a continuous vertical glazing composition that follows the scale of the pitched interior and brings daylight into the upper volume.

A Sieger Lux Casement Door provides an additional hinged access point, while aluminium casement windows introduce fixed and opening glazing elsewhere in the refurbishment. All aluminium frames were finished in dark grey, creating a consistent contrast with the pale walls, natural timber and grey stone flooring.

Project Highlight

A three-pane fixed window is aligned directly above a three-pane bifold door at the end of the living space. This stacked composition extends the glazing towards the pitched ceiling, increasing daylight while maintaining a consistent three-part rhythm across the fixed and opening elements.

Performance considerations

The Sieger Lux Bifold Doors combine slim aluminium profiles with thermally broken framing, allowing the project to achieve wide garden openings while supporting year-round internal comfort. The folding systems provide purge ventilation and direct access when open, while retaining daylight and garden views when closed.

The casement door and window systems address smaller access and ventilation requirements without requiring every elevation to use the same opening method. This allows the glazing package to respond to the function and proportions of each aperture.

Dark grey powder-coated aluminium provides a durable, low-maintenance finish across the door and window systems. The consistent frame treatment allows the different products to read as one coordinated aluminium glazing package against the timber beams and pale internal finishes.

Together, the aluminium glazing in Bristol supports the refurbishment’s balance of traditional structure, contemporary detailing, natural light and garden access.

Sieger’s conclusion

Main Road demonstrates how aluminium glazing in Bristol can be coordinated within a refurbishment that combines exposed timber architecture with contemporary living requirements. Multiple bifold openings connect the principal room to the garden, while fixed glazing above the doors uses the height of the pitched ceiling to increase daylight.

This approach is suited to architects, designers and homeowners renovating properties where bifold doors, casement openings and high-level fixed glazing must work together without losing the character of the existing interior.
