Project Overview

Steel look bifold doors in London form the principal garden-facing opening at Quarrendon Street, where a house renovation required a wide glazed elevation with the proportions of traditional industrial glazing. Sieger Systems supplied a four-panel Legacy bifold arrangement combining three folding leaves with a separately operated hinged pass door.

Bespoke aluminium glazing bars create the required steel look across the elevation, while dark grey powder-coated frames and brushed silver ironmongery coordinate with the bright kitchen interior. A cat flap was also integrated into the final folding pane, allowing a practical household requirement to be incorporated without disrupting the overall glazing composition.

Project Challenges

Steel look bifold doors in London with everyday pass-door access

The rear extension needed a substantially openable elevation to improve daylight, garden access and ventilation. At the same time, the homeowners wanted a more detailed steel-inspired appearance rather than a plain contemporary bifold system.

The door arrangement also needed to support two different patterns of use. The entire elevation had to open for a stronger connection with the garden, but routine access needed to remain straightforward without unfolding the complete system each time.

A further project-specific requirement was the integration of a cat flap. This needed to be positioned within the glazing without undermining the framing pattern or making the practical alteration appear visually separate from the door design.

Project Solutions

Four-panel bifold arrangement with bespoke glazing bars

Sieger Systems configured the rear opening as a four-panel Legacy bifold elevation. Three leaves form the principal folding stack, while the single hinged leaf on the left operates independently as a pass door for everyday access to the garden.

The complete arrangement can be opened to clear the rear elevation more extensively when required. This provides a flexible relationship between the kitchen and garden, while the separately operated door avoids the need to fold back the larger stack for routine movement.

Bespoke glazing bars were applied across the aluminium frames to reproduce the proportions and rhythm of traditional steel glazing. The pattern was developed specifically for the elevation, demonstrating how the system can be adapted to align with existing glazing, neighbouring architecture or internal design lines.

A cat flap was incorporated into the glazing of the final folding pane. Integrating it within the manufactured door composition allowed this practical feature to be included without adding a separate infill panel or interrupting the wider steel look design.

Project Highlight

The bespoke glazing bar pattern and integrated cat flap were both coordinated within the four-panel door design. This allowed the elevation to combine a controlled steel look appearance with the everyday access requirements of the homeowners and their pets.

Performance considerations

The four-panel configuration bifold door provides two levels of opening. The hinged pass door supports regular garden access, while the three folding leaves allow a much larger section of the elevation to be opened for ventilation and indoor-outdoor use.

When closed, the extensive glazed area increases daylight within the kitchen and maintains views towards the garden. The glazing bars add architectural definition without converting the opening into multiple separate window and door units.

The dark grey polyester powder-coated finish creates a strong contrast with the white kitchen finishes, while the brushed silver ironmongery reinforces the more traditional metal-glazing character. Integrating the cat flap into the final pane ensures that everyday functionality is addressed within the glazing specification rather than added retrospectively.

Sieger’s conclusion

Quarrendon Street demonstrates how steel look bifold doors in London can combine a highly openable garden elevation with traditional glazing proportions and practical daily access. The four-panel arrangement, bespoke glazing bars and integrated pet access were developed as one coordinated aluminium door design.

This approach is suited to architects, designers and homeowners working on extensions where a steel-inspired appearance is required alongside wide openings, a separately operated pass door and project-specific glazing details.
